In order to set up TMCStudio, extract all contents from the received ZIP file to a directory of your choice.

Note: The directory must be located on a local hard drive.

Open the directory and run TMCStudio.exe

This will open the window Import Location Table Exchange Format

With the Editor access level you can create, edit and manage primarily linears and points in your database.

→ Setup & Data Requirements for First Time Use

Then you might be required to add topics, uppon which you can base your network links.

Once Dataset Properties has been completed, you can begin.

Adding Roads; Segments; Points; Intersections
Start by clicking on 'Linears & Points' at the top of the data tree and then click on add new road .

This will make a new road appear at the bottom of the data tree called 'new road'.

Activate the Topic Information button and click on the road in the map you want to document.

This will diplay any available information on that road in a window.

This information can be coppied (right click, then 'copy value') and pasted into the 'General' section in the window beneath the data tree.

(This only works if you have an activated shapefile grid [These can be added in the Topics submenu])

After filling in the 'General'-information you can continue by:

* Adding a new point at an intersection.
* Coppying an existing point , if there already is a point at that intersection.
* If two idividually placed points both describe the same intersection, use: add intersection .
* You can also try searching the road in Custom Layers This will highlight any road by that name on the map.

Once you are done adding points to your road, you can continue by:

* Adding another road

Or, if your road contains a large number of points:

* Adding a new segment
:To maintain a good data overwiev and to prevent a data overload, one individual street should not comprise more than aproximatively 50 points.

:To increase the overview or if more points are required, a road can be sectioned into segments. Use this button to add segments.

Linear & Point Information
Clicking on a point or a road/linear opens a window below the data tree.

This window contains three/four subgroups: 'Linear'/'Point'; 'References'; 'Errors' and 'Coordinates' (only with points).

*Linear/Point: This subgroup contains general information like the name and number that serves to identify and sort the linears/points.

*References: This group diplays the hierachical surrounding of the linear/point. A linear-Refrence will usually contain the 'area' the linear belongs to.

:Point-Refrences will contain the 'area' and the 'linear' the point belongs to, plus the points that come before (negative offset) and after (positive offset) it.

*Errors: After running a semantic check, all points that turned out to have errors are listed in the data tree.

:This subgroup gives information about the error and how it can be removed.

Jumbeled Points & Streets
It can happen that the order of the points and streets becom jumbeled.

This can be solved by right clicking on the name of one of the points that should be positioned at the beginning of the road and then clicking on 'Reorder Points On Road'.

These images display a before and after scenario:

↓

Special Road Situations: One Way, Interrupted and Isolated
One Way: To make a one way street, you first need to generate a regular street.

If the 'Extra Attributes' are not already available in the window beneath the data tree, the first need to be activated.

To do so, go to 'Options' → General → Miscellaneous.

There, tick the box next to the field Use Extra Attributes and click OK.

Now there should be additional information in the window beneath the data tree. This information consists of six boxes named 'Present +/-' 'In +/-' and 'Out +/-'.

To genrate the one way street, you need to select the point at which you would enter into the one way street.

In the Extra Attributes of this point you now need to remove the tick from Present - (present negative).

This will mark the oncomming street as being one way.

Iterrupted Road: A road can be interrupted and continue on again under the same name at a later point.

This might happen when two motorways merge and then split up again, but during the time they run together they carry the name of only one of the two motorways.

This phenomenon can be modueled by ticking the box 'Interrups Road' in the 'Flags' menu of the points at the beginning and the end of the interruption.

In this example the points C and D stand at either end of an interruption. 'Interrupts Road' has been ticked in their 'Flags' menu.

As a consequence, the icons to the left of their names have turned blue. The result can be seen on the right-hand side: All points except the interrupted part are connected.

Isolated: A point on a road might be isolated. An isolated point will be some distance away from the rod that is being worked on.

On a separated two way street some points, like a motorway stop, might only refer to one side of the street. In this case that point needs to be flagged as 'Isolated'.

The link editor builds up on the functions available in the editor.

Import from Exchange table
Concerning older TMC versions:
→ Open Database

Define network database for attributing map liks
To be able to link TMC Paths and Map, you will require the additional license for these functions.
Once you have these licences go through the following steps:

Menu → Link Editor → Import Network Database form Shapefile

Configuration of the Link Editor
Amongst other things, this page is used to enable the link editor's buttons & functions.

Menu → Tools → Options → Link Editor

Using the Link Editor Menu
This menu is used in order to import, export and manage any information concerning the link editor.

Menu → Category Link Editor

Using the Link Editor Toolbar
Toolbar Link Editor

Now you will be able to start working with the Link Editor.

Start by clicking add network link . Now click on the road near the beginning of a TMC-link. This will create the first network link. Make sure that the arrows of the network link are facing in the right direction (usually this will be the same direction as the arrows of the TMC-link are pointing in).

Now do the same at the other end of the TMC-link. Now that there is a network link at the beginning and at the end of the TMC-link press routing. In most cases will not only fill in the remaining network links, but also arrange all network links in the same direction and list them in the correct order in the window on the lower left-hand side.

Occasionally 'routing' experiences difficulties when placing the remaining network links.

Roundabouts can pose a problem resluting in 'routing' placing network links everywhere on the roundabout or going off in a nonsensical direction. Roads with different hierarcical levels can also be source of mistakes.

'Routing' will sometimes move the links to a road of a higher level (should it intersects with one), despite the road starting and ending on a lower hierachical level.

Finally, in the rare case that the underlying data is in some way corrupted or badly composed, 'routing' will generate a network-link road that follows a completely different route (usually a very long one).

In these cases the easiest way is usually to lay the network links manually. When doing so, it is important to make sure that the sequence of the network links on the map corresponds with the sequence of the links in the list on the left-hand side.

This can be done by opening an existing database from the welcome screen or Open Database from the toolbar.

Choose Import Location Table Exchange Format into new database from the welcome screen if you have a Location Table (as a single ZIP-file or several DAT-files) at your disposal and would like to import it to a new, empty database.

Alternatively, click the Import Location Table Exchange Format button after having closed the welcome screen.

To import a Location Table, fill in the required blanks in the window, as described below.

Database

Double click on the white space next to Database file.

Here you can enter a name for your database. The program will automatically turn it into a Firebird file (*.fdb).

Uppon specifying a database, an .ini file of the same name as the .fdb file will be created under Settings file.

The project also requires that it be given a name.

Once the import process has been completed, the project name will be stored in the .ini file and will appear in the list of projects when you open TCMStudio.

:Warning
::Please note that in either case, the database cannot be created on a network drive and/or server!

Import

Depending on the location table format you are trying to import, select either source file or source directory.

If your Location Table file is a ZIP file (*.zip), click on the white space next to source file, click on the folder icon and locate the ZIP.

If your Location Table consists of a number of DAT files (*.dat), click on the white space next to source directory, click on the folder icon and locate the directory where your location table (consisting of a number of files in DAT format) is stored. The DAT files all have to be stored within one single folder.

As soon as a valid folder containing the necessary DAT files is selected, the name of the corresponding Location Table is shown in the lower part of the window (large white space).

Run semantic checks

It is highly recommended that you tick the option run semantic checks for every location table you import into your database!

If the option is selected, the imported location table will be verified directly after the data import.

Visit the Semantic Checks page to learn more about this function.

Once all the data has been entered, the window should resemble this:

To start the data import, click the OK button.

The location tables will be imported, the database tables created and the data checked. This may take a few seconds.

The following window should open:

In the window, fill in all fields according to the instructions below to import a Location Table.

Database
:Here you need to define the database to which the Location Table file will be imported to. You have two options:

:Using the Folder button on the right of the text field, you have to choose from two possibilities:
:*Choose an existing database: Double click the text field. Click the folder icon on the right. Navigate to an existing and empty Firebird database (*.fdb).
:*Create a new database: Tick the box 'create new database'. Double click on the 'database file' text field and click the folder icon. Browse to a locally saved directory where the new database has to be stored, type in a name for it and do not forget to add the ending ".fdb" to it.

:Warning
::Please note that in either case, the database cannot be created on a network drive and/or server!

Source file
:If your Location Table file comes as a ZIP-file (file format: *.zip), browse for it on your computer and define it here.
:If your Location Table consists of a number of DAT-files (file format: *.dat) leave this field blank and use Source directory instead:

Source directory
:Browse for and indicate the directory where your Location Table (consisting of a number of files in DAT format) is stored. Those DAT-files have to be saved within one single folder.
:If your Location Table is a ZIP-file, leave this field empty and fill in the field Source file instead!
:As soon as a valid folder containing the necessary DAT-files is selected, the name of the corresponding Location Table is shown in the lower part of the window (large white space):

:

Run semantic checks
:It is highly recommended that you tick this option for every Location Table you import into your database!
:Visit the Semantic Checks page to learn more about this function.

To start the data import, click the OK button.

Now your Location Table is being imported, the database tables created and the data checked. This may take some seconds.

As soon as this process is completed and in case you ran the import routine including the semantic checks, a list of check statements is shown.

Visit the Semantic Checks page to learn how to proceed.

With the Link Editor access level you can create network links and have access to the Link Editor menu and all functions it contains.

To be able to link TMC Paths and Map, you will require the additional license for these functions.
Once you have these licences go through the following steps:

Menu → Link Editor → Import Network Database form Shapefile

Configuration of the Link Editor
Menu → Tools → Options → Link Editor

Using the Link Editor Menu
Menu → Category Link Editor

Using the Link Editor Toolbar
Toolbar Link Editor

Now you will be able to start working with the Link Editor.

General
The window general contains the name, the location of the topic file and the file for configuration, the coordinate system used and the filetype.

Scale determines the range within which the data of the topic file is visible on the map. With opacity you can determine how well the data should be visible.

It is adviseable to use the same settings for screen and printer (this can be done by ticking the box apply for printer). This way a printout will look the same as displayed onscreen. Alternatively the box can be left unticked and settings for the printer can be set individually.

Files
The window files contains the individual files containing the information of the corresponding topic. In this window files can be added or deleted. The extent of these files can also be calculated here.
Add new file (all formats)

This button is used to add geodata from one or several files to the topic.

This button is used to add geodatalayers that are provided by a WMS- or SDE-server.
Deletes the currently selected file or layer.
Build extent for all items

Clicking this button determines the geographical extent of the file based on the integrated georeference. This helps TMC Studio load and display the data more quickly. Files whose extent has been been calculated are displayed with a green tick .

Display
The appearance of the Display window depends on the data that is being processed. The data in question will usually either be raster or vector data.

Raster data
Here you can

*adjust the RGB-values
*brighness & contrast
*...
*choose to set certain colours to transparent
*choose form a set of prdefined settings

Vector data
Clicking Add renderer adds a new row/filter option in the list on the left-hand side of the window. It can be renamed by double clicking on it.

Highlighted renderers can be deleted by clicking the button.

Clicking one of the greens arrows moves the highlighted renderer either further up or further down the list.

Clicking opens the Wizard window. This help with categorizing and displaying attributes.

Vector data - Filter
If all objects of a vector layer are to be displaied in the same way, it is suficient to click on one of the three windows Points, Lines or Areas (usually only one of these windows will be active/available). This opens the Settings window where the display design can be adjusted.

If however the attributes of an object call for a different form of presentation, you need to create individual renderers and define filters and display designs for each of them. This can either be done manually by adding a new renderer or by using the wizard .

In the Filter window you can choose how your attributes will be displayed on the map.

Once the settings have been completed, further adjustments can be made in the

Visible at scale: The renderer is only displayed within this scale range. This can be useful when working with renderers that require a large amount of computing power, but are for instance only required at a high zoom level (p.ex. aerial photographs)

Opacity: The lower the percentage, the easier it will be to see through that object.

Filter & SQL: Filter allows you to assign a value range. The filter can also be written directly into the field to the right of SQL.

Warning

When several renderes are located in the same geographical area and thus overlap, only the topmost rendere is displayed. To remedy this, it is adviseable to sort the renderers that larger signatures are located under smaller signatures. (Thicker lines under thinner ones or larger points under smaller points). This can be done by sorting the individual renderes in the list on the lifet-hand side of the window. To ensure that the renderes are also displayed in this order, the checkbox force order in the lower left-hand corner needs to be ticked.

Vector data - Label
In the window 'Label' the label of the object can be customised. The background color and the size of the lables can be edited here.

Vector data - Gradient
Feature
In the window feature you can decide which information is diplayed in the window Topic Information and choose which attributes are used as lables.

Fieldname

This column contains the names of all the attributes in the attached geodata.

Type

Describes the fieldtype of the corresponding attribute field. S = string (textfield); N = numeric (field for integral numbers); F = floating (field for numbers with commas); D = date

Active

For an attribute to be displayed in the window Topic Information, the corresponding box needs to be ticked. In the given example, only NAME would be displayed.

Description

If the name of the attribute is not clear, an alternative description can be entered here. Any text entered here will be displayed in the window 'Topic Information'.

Unit

Here you can enter the unit of the attribute (p.ex.: cm, litre, kg etc.).

Format

Because they are considered to be text, numbers by default are not sorted by value but by digit (1, 11, 112, 12, 2 instead of 1, 2, 11, 12, 112). To remedy this, a row containing numbers can be set to 'number' by double clicking on the field and opening the dropdown list.

Catalog

Clicking on the catalog button while an attribute is highlighted opens the following window:

In this window the individual values of the highlighted attribute are listed on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side they can be attributed with new values or names. The list of these names can be saved as .xls file (by clicking on the excel icon) and can be retrievd again via the folder icon.

The new names/values should be chosen sensibly. This can best be checked by opening the window 'Topic Information'.

Edit

To equip objects with attributes, these attributes need to be entered in the Label window. This is best done by first highlighting an attribute (a row) and then clicking on Edit -> Add field 'XY'".

In this window you can also:
* Add an empty text field
* Add a line break
* Switch into manual mode (useful for deleting entrys)
* Delete all entries

Warning
New entries will always appear at the end of the list, even when working in manual mode.

The topic is visible between the zoom scales entered in 'from' (smaller scale) and 'to' (larger scale).
:This should help prevent the program running slowly when zooming out very far. The icon on the left of the topic's name is coloured if you are within the set visible range and grey if you are beyond it.

The position of the topic in the list has an influence on how it is displayed on the map.

Add layer from server

This button is used to add geodatalayers that are provided by a WMS- or SDE-server.

Delete current entry

Deletes the currently selected file or layer.

Build extent for all items

Clicking this button determines the geographical extent of the file based on the integrated georeference. This helps TMC Studio load and display the data more quickly. Files whose extent has been been calculated are displayed with a green tick .

Display
The appearance of the Display window depends on the data that is being processed. The data in question will usually either be raster or vector data.

Raster data
Here you can

*adjust the RGB-values
*brighness & contrast
*...
*choose to set certain colours to transparent
*choose form a set of prdefined settings

Vector data
Clicking Add new renderer adds a new row/filter option in the list on the left-hand side of the window.

* Add a line break
* Switch into manual mode (useful for deleting entrys)
* Delete all entries

Warning
New entries will always appear at the end of the list, even when working in manual mode.
